in the past 30 years AFL/VFL has changed so much and still eg. clubs coming, going and the national expansion. i was told by 2020 the AFL want to merge/kill 2 victorian clubs because there are too many. victoria is the home of aussie rules footy and that should be greatly respected by the AFL. what are your thoughts?

Well the first merger in 1996 was devastating enough. We don't need, say, North Melbourne and Melbourne mergng - it'll hurt many people, because I know a fair few Melbourne supporters that used to be Fitzroy fans...

Well, in the end of the day, it's a business.

In America, where the idea of sport as a business is most prominent, many teams fold, get created, move location, and that's that. There's none of this "Will it hurt the fans?" or "What about the heritage?"

I fear that's the direction the Australian leagues (AFL, NRL etc) are heading.

It's either that or go to a European division based system from Demitriou's point of view
