Having a coach who knows the modern game certainly helps. Helps even more when his best mates are the players he's coaching. Having lead Brisbane to their first finals series since 2004, Michael Voss wants to take the Lions to bigger and better things in 2010. After Leigh Matthews resigned, Voss was signed to take up the reigns. Now it's Voss' time to create his own history. His already started going with a mass clean out of players. He delisted Joel Macdonald, Scott Harding, Rhan Hooper, Jason Roe, Scott Clouston, Kieran King and Matthew Tyler, and rookies Daniel Dzufer, Pat Garner, Daniel Murray, Adam Spackman and Joel Tippett. Some good quality players in there. This might have been quite drastic under normal off season proceedings, but it wasn't very normal for Brisbane. They were by far the most active team in trade week.

Brisbane picked up Andrew Raines for Pick #44. Most people deemed Brisbane the winner of this trade. Then Brisbane, Sydney and West Coast were involved in a 3 way trade, Brisbane gained some good players, Amon Buchanan and Brent Staker (most famous for being punched by Barry Hall). Brisbane then won another trade trading pick #60 for Xavier Clarke from St. Kilda. Brisbane fan's were stoked with this trade knowing the talent Xavier Clarke has. Then came the final 2 days of trade week. Brisbane were making offers to Carlton superstar Brendon Fevola. Carlton have wanted to trade him due to some issues with him and the club. Brisbane offered up Daniel Bradshaw, a very popular Brisbane player and Michael Rischitelli, a realitively young player with a fair bit of talent. Most Brisbane fans weren't a fan of the trade. Some believed that the talent level of Brdshae and Rischitelli out weighed Fevola's. Others didn't want Bradshaw to leave. Most thought they had their wish on Thursday night, under a day untill the trade deadline, but when they woke up the next morning supporters were in for a suprise. The newspapers were reporting that another deal was in the pipeline. The reports were corrected. However the deal this time upset carlton fans. Brisbae agreed to trade Pick #12 (Carlton picked up Kane Lucas with this pick) and Lachlan Henderson (who has rarely got into the Brisbane side because of the jam-packed line of fringe players trying to get in also) for Brendan Fevola. Most carlton fans threatend to not renew their memberships because they got a "nobody" for Fevola. Michael Voss was very happy that he'd have Bradshaw, Fevola and Brown in the same forward line. However when trade week came to an end, Brashaw wanted to leave the Lions for putting him up for trade. Brisbane offered him another contract, however Bradsahw declined and nominated for the pre-season draft.

Due to a big trade week, the draft for Brisbane was quit quite as Brisbane's first pick was #27. With that they selceted young-gun Callum Bartlett, who was tipped to be in the Top 10 however due to an injury at the start of the season he slipped down to pick #27. Luke Ball hadn't been picked by another club yet (as he left St. Kilda). Michael Voss said eariler in the week Brisbane wouldn't be affraid to pick him. However they didn't and he was picked 3 picks later by Collingwood at Pick #30. Callum is a goal kicking midfielder. The Lions then pickd Ryan Harwood (Midfielder), Jessie O'Brien (midfielder), Bryce Retzlaff (Half Forward/Half Back). Then Brisbane picked up saints star Matt Maguire
which surprised most people. Matt played 99 games for St. Kilda between 2002 and 2009. And at 25 he still has half his carrer ahead of him. Brisbane then picked up Pearce Hanley who has play with the club the last few seasons. He was a promoted rookie.

In the rookie draft Brisbane used pick #16 for Mitchell Golby who is an attacking defender. With pick #32 they picked Josh Dyson a midfilder. And with selection #67 they picked up Nial McKeever, an Irishman who swapped Galic football for AFL. He is possbiley going to be a forward. With pick #74, Brisbane got the first ever Japanese born player, Sean Yoshuira, Sean is a wingman. Brisbane used Pick #76 to get Claye Beams, a natural midfielder and with the final selection of the Rookie draft, Brisbane used Pick #78 for Broc McCauley, a 202cm ruckman.

With the additions of the off-season Brisbane will be looking to do something in the next 3 or 4 years. Their aim for this year is to finish in the Top 4. Being one of 6 likely teams that are going to be up there in 2010. It will be interesting to see how Fevola and Brown will go together. The 2 best forwards in the same forward line mightn't be the best thing. However hopefully after a few games, these 2 will know each other and how to keep each other in order. Another interesting prospect is the ruck. After Jamie Charman and Matthew Leuenberger being injured for most of the 2009 season. The ruck duties were left to part time ruckman Mitch Clark. Clark was very unlucky for an All Asustralian selection. He was effectively an on baller for most of year the who did the ruck. One of the best, if not the best breakthrough season of 2009. However with Leuenberger and Charman coming back from their injuries, it's hard to tell if Mitch may keep his spot. Some think Mitch will be moved up forward and do some ruckwork along with Leuenberger and Charman. Others think it will be Clark and Leuenberger doing the ruck by themselves seeing Michael Voss seems to favour Matthew more the Jamie. The defence should be good with Drummond, Merret, McGrath Raines and Patfull. Adcock may also work off the flanks and do abit in the midfield. The defence will also be helped by the massive number of guys who can work on the half back flanks. Brisbane may have also found their small forward in James Polkinghorne. He kicked a few goals in 2009 and if he can kick 30-35 goals in 2010, Brisbane would have the best forward line in the competition. Also like the defence Brisbane have a number of players who can stay on the flanks. Brent Staker may play on a flank along with Amon Buchanan.
The midfield has a number of stars this year, Power, Black, Bartlett, Rich, Rischitelli, Stiller, Sherman and many more of the half back/midfield/half forward brand. The Lions mdifield is returning to what it was in the glory days. If the players can connect well with the forwards and the defence. So this could mean a lot more goals. The defence, midfield, ruck and the offence are all better than last year and all very strong, it's going to b hard to over-look this team for a Top 4 spot next year. Maybe even a preimership in 2011 or 2012.
